FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — Fort Myers Beach made progress cleaning up the beach from Hurricane Ian debris. Now Hurricane Idalia is throwing a wrench… metal… a few bathtubs… and furniture… into the progress.
“We found some sea glass and some screws and some tiles,” said beachgoer Lauren Dadis.
Dadis said she comes to Fort Myers Beach every year, this year on a girls’ trip with some friends.
“We found a lot of the tiling from where the pier was. Like the blue tile from the signature Fort Myers stuff,” she said.
Hidden in the sand aren’t just the small things. Some things are too big to fit in her ziplock bag. Like the desks and bathtubs washing up near Connecticut Street.
Beach Talk Radio is hosting a beach clean-up event on Friday, September 1, 2023, to get rid of the debris.
“They’re meeting at Lynn Hall Park between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.,” said Mayor Dan Allers, who will be joining the effort.
Mayor Allers said bags and gloves will be provided.
“When you get the bags filled up just put them up on the beach access closest to you and they’ll come around to pick it up. Public Works will pick it up,” said Mayor Allers.
