MARCO ISLAND, Fl. (WBBH) — The Cape Romano Dome House stood for 40 years, but couldn’t withstand the strength of Hurricane Ian. The category four storm sunk the concrete structure below the water in its final resting place.
The Dome House was built in 1982 on what was Morgan Island, just south of Marco Island in the Ten Thousand Islands.
Consisting of six dome-shaped concrete structures, several families called the unique structure home until 1992 when Hurricane Andrew blew out the windows and destroyed the interior. While the interior was ruined, the structure itself remained relatively untouched.
However, years of rising water and eroding sand slowly sank the Dome House lower into the Gulf of Mexico. The building took another hit when Hurricane Irma sank two of the six standing structures in 2015.
The final day for the Dome House came on September 28, when Hurricane Ian decimated what remained.
Now only a partial remnant can be seen by boaters traversing through the area that used to attract tourists from all over.
